Since launching last year, I’ve received so many questions about the business.

Helping other women in business is something that I love to do, so I’m more than happy to answer any questions that come my way.

However the questions asked are often similar and answering them can be a time-consuming process.

So I thought I’d collate all of your questions and put them into a blog post for you.

That way you’ve got all the resources to help you launch or brand your own business in one handy place. It also means I can quickly flick through a link to anyone looking for a few tips. It’s win win for everyone!

Before we get started, one important thing to remember is that setting up a new business takes months of planning. Or at least it took me months.

I spent hours researching everything from packaging suppliers to website plugins. It’s hard, often frustrating work. But it’s all part of launching a business, especially if you’re doing it on a fairly tight budget.

So while I am going to share with you details of where we source various items from, I’m not going to include the links. This is because:

  1. finding all of those links will take hours. Seriously, adding links into a blog post is such a time-consuming job. I wish I had the time to find all the links for you, but unfortunately I don’t.
  2. you can find anything via google. It’s how I found most things for our business and it’s definitely how you can too. Just google the names I’m about to give you and you’ll be good to go, I promise!

Ok, let’s get started. Here’s a list of the questions I’m asked pretty much every week.¬† I hope the answers help you and your business.



1. I love your branding. Who created it for you?

I did it myself. Black, white and pale pink is the overarching theme.

2. Who designs the cards you send with your orders?

I design them using Photoshop, Illustrator or Canva.

3. Where do you get them printed?


4. Where do you get your boxes from?

5. Who designed your product labels?

I did. I completed a 12 month online graphic design course through The Graphic Design School a couple of years ago, which has given me a basic understanding of Photoshop and Illustrator.

I’m VERY slow with both programs and far too particular about all the minor details, but having those basic skills has saved us thousands when it came to branding our business.

6. Who did your website?

I did – are we sensing a theme here lol. I wasn’t kidding when I said we were on a tight budget ūüėČ

7. What platform do you use?

The website is run on WordPress with WooCommerce installed.

8. Who do you use for website hosting?

Digital Pacific

9. I’m about to launch an online store. Should I use WooCommerce or Shopify?

That decision needs to be yours. I’d suggest googling both and deciding based on the information you read on both.

I’ve used both e-commerce platforms in the past and prefer WooCommerce for three reasons:

  1. It’s great for SEO
  2. It’s free
  3. It’s really easy to use

10. Who makes your products?

We do. Scott hand blends all of the products in small batches from our Brisbane based production facility.¬† This¬† ensures you’re receiving the freshest of products with each and every order.

11. I’m an influencer and I was wondering how to become an ambassador for Bettyquette?

This is a request I receive on a regular basis.¬†If you’re interested in becoming an ambassador/brand rep/collaborator with any brand or business, here are a few pointers to consider:

Have you read the bio of the brand/business you’re approaching?

Reading the Instagram bio or even the ‘about us’ page on the brand/business website is a quick and easy way to familiarise yourself with the brand.

It shows the person you’re emailing/messaging that you’re not only interested in their products, but also their story.

I can’t begin to tell you the number of messages and emails I’ve received from bloggers and influencers who would love to work with us but haven’t visited our website or read our Instagram bio.

Because if they had, they’d know that¬†I too am an “influencer”

Which isn’t a term I use to describe myself, but it is the industry standard, so influencer it is.

I’ve been blogging at Kirsten and co. for seven years and work with a number of brands to assist with the promotion of their products. I mentor other bloggers, help other business women with their social media and have a thorough understanding of how the whole influencer thing works.

I know how to pitch to a brand, I know how product reviews and giveaways work and I know the legal requirements for disclosing gifted items.

Please don’t email me – or any other brand –¬† asking for “free stuff” “free samples” or “free” anything.

A successful influencer is one who looks after their community first and themselves second.


now that we have the rant out of the way…

12. The first thing I look for is – how engaged is your audience?

The numbers don’t matter – genuine engagement trumps numbers every time.

It’s really obvious when comments are made via comment pods/groups or followers have been bought.

If you have a highly engaged genuine following, who purchase products based on your recommendations, congratulations! You’re officially an influencer.


13. The second thing I consider is Рare you already a customer of ours?  

You don’t have to buy products to collab with us, but if you’re contacting us because you use and genuinely love the products, that’s fabulous and we need to talk.


14. The third thing I think about is –¬† what time are your messaging me?

Messaging a brand or business at 11 o’clock at night, with a follow-up message half an hour later isn’t a great start.

I completely understand that social media runs all day – and all night – long, but business hours should still be respected where possible.

Instead of messaging before the clock strikes midnight, perhaps consider taking the time to write an email instead.

Introduce yourself, explain why you would like to collaborate and what you can offer the brand/business in return for the free products you’re asking for.

A professional approach wins hands down every time.

Samples, events and giveaways

17. I would like some samples. Can you send me some?

We don’t send samples. If you’re unsure about our products there are plenty of honest and genuine¬†customer reviews on our product pages.


18. I’m organising a charity event. Can you donate products or cash to it?

We host our own annual charity event via my blog, Kirsten and co. so understand the work that goes into organising an event for charity.

Any donations we make to charities other than the ones we officially support, are made on a case by case basis.

We don’t make donations to events that aren’t officially endorsed and/or run in conjunction with an organisation.

Nor do we send prize packs directly to private PO Boxes – you would be amazed at how many emails we receive from people asking for products for non-existent charities or events. (We flick those ones onto the relevant authorities.)


19. I’m hosting a giveaway on Instagram soon. Would you like to take part?

I’d love to but unfortunately giveaways haven’t proved to be a very successful marketing tool for us*, so I will have to decline.

*we pick up hundreds of followers while the giveaway is running and lose most of them once the giveaway is over. Slowly gaining the trust of followers who genuinely love our brand is our preferred marketing approach.


20. What networking events do you attend?

Business Chicks breakfasts or lunches when I have the time!
